North Park EcoDistrict is a community-based initiative in the historic North Park neighborhood of San Diego, Ca. Founded and supported by North Park Main Street’s sustainability initiative, North Park EcoDistrict aspires to cultivate and celebrate North Park as a livable, mindful and inspiring neighborhood with a thriving green economy. North Park is a bustling urban center characterized by its thriving arts community, farm-to-table restaurants, locally focused businesses, historic charm, and thoughtful inspired community.
As a volunteer-based, 501(c)(6) non-profit organization, North Park Main Street (NPMS) advocates for North Park’s downtown business community, administers the North Park Business Improvement District (BID), and champions development that preserves the community’s historic integrity, supports its Arts, Culture & Entertainment District, and promotes an urban, pedestrian- friendly shopping/ dining environment.
Sustainability and quality of life is fostered within our communities. North Park EcoDistrict aims to:
- Sustain and celebrate the neighborhood’s historic nature
- Use natural resources mindfully and creatively
- Enable a thriving green economy
- Foster community connectivity and well being
- Nurture the local natural environment
- Promote equity
- Inspire community members and other neighborhoods
A wee bit of history: In 2009, Wayne Donaldson, California’s State Historic Preservation Officer, challenged North Park Main Street (NPMS) to become the state’s first Sustainable Main Street program.
Community leaders embraced this challenge and later that year convened a group of local stakeholders to develop a vision for sustainability in North Park. Working with the community, NPMS drafted a set of goals & objectives which can be found in the Sustainability Study and Implementation Plan. You can read and download the Plan from our ISSU page.
This effort has now has now transformed into North Park EcoDistrict!
