Below is the day-by-day resource guide for the North Park EcoDistrict Spring Challenge. We provide all the resources you need to get it done. Please share what you implement each day of the challenge through the Spring Challenge Facebook page as well as through your social media voice. E-mail email@example.com to join the challenge!
We all know Styrofoam is bad for the environment and for our health. Swap out any Styrofoam packaging for a recycled and recyclable/compostable option for today’s challenge. You’ll be helping to reduce one of the top 3 forms of litter found at beach clean-ups and reducing carcinogens in the environment. Find sustainable food packaging resources here: http://www.sustainablefoodservice.com/cat/biodegradable-foodservice-products.htm
You may also talk to one of the many North Park businesses who are already using eco-minded to-go packaging like Sea Rocket Bistro, the Linkery, and Urban Solace, just to name a few.
We are more mindful of our energy use when we can measure and track it. Start tracking your energy today by signing up for the SDG&E’s Green Button Feature: http://www.sdge.com/green-button
To access both Green Button and Green Button Connect My Data, you need to be a registered user of My Account. If you haven’t signed up for My Account, it’s easy:
- Use your 10 or 11-digit account number from your SDG&E bill.
- Enter the 5-digit zip code of your billing address.
- Choose your own user name and password.
Sometimes small investments can yield big savings! Install aerators with flow rates of or below 2.0 gallons per minutes (gpm) on your sink faucets for today’s challenge. They attach to your faucet outlet and save water each time you turn it on. We recommend them for bathroom and hand washing sinks. Make sure to check if your faucet is ‘male’ or ‘female’.
North Park Hardware has aerators available at low flow rates of 1.5 gpm and 2.0 gpm for under $8. Just ask Sam if you can’t find them!
Recycling can save money and it helps us circulate resources back into the economy. We are seeking to gather information on business recycling in North Park. Please take just a few moments to take our recycling survey HERE for today’s challenge.
We are partnering with 1:1 Movement to save resources, encouraging bars and eateries to join the ‘Straw Pledge’. This means provide straws by request only, instead of slipping them in every beverage for today’s challenge. A small table tent promo piece can be used to let your customers know you are participating in the ‘Straw Pledge’. Each customer can help by skipping the straw. There are already 8 businesses right in North Park signed on to the Straw Pledge for good; how ‘bout it?
In this day, all the supplies that you buy for your business have their ‘green’ equivalent! Switch one cleaning product to a green alternative today and you’ve completed Friday’s challenge. Our favorite brands do not contain harsh chemicals and are biodegradable. Check this guide for top eco- and health minded cleaning brands.
North Park Hardware caries Simple Green, a good alternative. Try Olive Branch Green Building Supply or Albertson’s for several options. If you are using Ecolab, Waxie or other janitorial supplies vendor, ask them about green alternatives. Ask North Park Fitness about their green cleaning co.!
Today we encourage the North Park community to use fun alternatives to the standard passenger car. Reward your customers for showing up on a bike, electric scooter, car-share, on foot, etc. for today’s challenge. Offer them a small discount, a free beverage, or something else creative. Be sure to advertise Transportation Saturday through your Social Media channels so North Parkers know to show up via alternative transportation.
